"First Aid for Poisoning: Identifying Symptoms and Immediate Response Measures"

Main types of poisoning and symptoms:

  • Poisonous plants

    • Severe throwing up

    • Diarrhea (frequent, loose, watery poop) that can be bloody

    • Dry mouth

    • Fast heartbeat

  • Venom (snakes)

    • Pain (sharp, throbbing, burning)

    • Color changes to your skin

    • Sweating and/or drooling

    • Nausea and vomiting

  • Food poisoning

    • feeling sick (nausea)

    • diarrhoea, which may contain blood or mucus.

    • stomach cramps and abdominal pain

  • Mushrooms

    • Increased tearing and salivation

    • Sweating

    • Vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea

    • Dizziness

Immediate Responses:

  • Poisonous plants:

    • Remove any contaminated clothing using gloves. Rinse the skin for 15 to 20 minutes in a shower or with a hose.

  • Venom:

    • Use soap and water to gently wash the bite area and cover the bite wound with a clean, dry wound dressing or bandage while waiting for help to come.

  • Food poisoning

    • Lie down and rest while drinking plenty of water. 

    • Eat light bland easily digestible foods.

  • Mushroom

    • If the person has collapsed or stopped breathing, call 000 for an ambulance and stand by.
